What a Concert!

Last night Jeff and I had the great pleasure of attending a concert of Choro and bluegrass music by Mike Marshall and Hamilton de Holanda.

Since Jeff is an avid mandolin player and enthusiast, I'm familiar with many of the musical styles suitable for the instrument, but the virtuosity of these two guys was stunning. Honestly, there were times I marveled at how quickly they could make their fingers move. The Choro pieces were lovely, but the standout of the evening for me was Gator Strut. It had such a cool feel, and they just whipped it into a breathless frenzy of zinging strings.

If you get a chance to see either one of these guys perform (or, better yet, both of them together), take it. It will be well worth the price of admission.

This was part of a series of concerts presented by Dominican University in River Forest. In January, we attended a concert that featured Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile, which was also outstanding.
